Transitioning all sites to traffic encryption (HTTPS)

To protect yourself and your members, WildApricot requires traffic encryption for all our client sites. This means that all site pages and all page content must use URLs that begin with HTTPs rather than HTTP.

Traffic encryption is a method of securing the transmission of information to and from a website.

You don't have to do anything about this if you are:

  • using wildapricot.org as your site domain
  • using a custom domain with a security certificate and have set your traffic encryption option to Always

If the Traffic encryption option is not available under Website on your Settings screen, it's because your traffic encryption is already set to Always.

However, action is required if you are:

  • using a custom domain without a security certificate
  • using a custom domain with a security certificate but you haven't set your encryption option to Always
  • using links or displaying content that starts with HTTP rather than HTTPS

If you use a custom domain without a security certificate

You need to obtain a custom security certificate (SSL certificate) for your domain. After that, you can set your traffic encryption to Always so that all traffic to your site is encrypted and secure.

For instructions on ordering a free security certificate from Let's Encrypt, click here.

If you use a secured custom domain but haven't set your encryption option to Always

You need to go to the Traffic encryption screen and select the Always option. For instructions, click here.

If the Traffic encryption option is not available under Website on your Settings screen, it's because your traffic encryption is already set to Always.

If you link to content using HTTP

You need to review the links, images, and other content in your site and make sure that their URLs begin with HTTPS rather than HTTP. If they begin with HTTP, change the URL to HTTPS.

Content that begins with HTTP may not load when the page is loaded using HTTPS.

Pro Tip: Enter your site URL starting with HTTPS rather than HTTP in the address bar of your browser then see what links or images don't load or work on your website. That way, you'll know where to begin making changes.
